Book Reviews
 | Frommers Destinations (frommers.com): New Orleans In Depth, "Recommended Books"
"If you're interested in women's history, Women and New Orleans by Mary Gehman is fascinating and well written."
 | Bill Dawes, New Orleans Tour Guide
As a tour guide, this book is invaluable to me. I believe it is historically accurate, yet it tells the popular legends and identifies them as such. This gifted author writes concisely and clearly. I won't be lending this book to anyone -- I hope to commit perhaps half of it to memory, and must keep it nearby for frequent reference.
Anyone planning to visit this unique city will find the kind of New Orleans history lesson that can only be given by a trained professional tour guide. Ms. Gehman is, among other things, a tour guide who has done her research well. Her focus is on women, the good and not-so-good, but telling this story through the eyes and acts of the 'better half' renders a complete picture. Some raw stories gave me goose bumps, but most tell of the contributions of caring, passionate, and compassionate women. You will learn just what makes the heart of this city beat. Many great photos will let you look into the eyes of these women, see thier homes, or read the original news articles. This is an exhilarating trip that brings the past to life.
